Once upon a piano time

The number of pieces of classical piano music written specifically for an audience of children is very small. Among the finest is Poulenc’s Babar the Elephant for piano and narrator which
follows the pictures in the book ‘The Story of Babar’.
The other stories on this CD include a story about dinosaurs written by my daughter, Olga when she was seven with Bartok piano accompaniments and a story from the Finnish national
epic, Kalevala, ‘Who stole the moon?’ set to Debussy piano music.

Journey with Chopin

Recordings of Chopin’s piano music abound, but here we have some familiar music mixed with some novelties – the two polonaises Chopin wrote at the age of seven, a mazurka op.41
no.1 using the Phrygian mode, and four pieces where the stamp of his Scottish pupil, Jane Stirling is to be found: the well-known nocturnes op.9 no.2 and an early mazurka op.7 no.1 played with amendments for Jane, and the two Nocturnes op.55 written specially for her.
